Optical Mass Gauging System for Use in Microgravity Environments

چکیده

Currently there are no effective methods of obtaining accurate fluid volume measurements in a microgravity environment. Conventional fluid measurement methods rely solely upon gravity to settle the fluid in order to obtain accurate measurements. However, this approach cannot be applied when fluids are within a microgravity environment and experience sloshing. This optical mass gauging system utilizes a Mach-Zender interferometer in conjunction with a pressurized air system in order to measure the “ullage” volume around the fluid rather than the fluid itself. This method will measure fluid volume accurately without implementing bulky, expensive equipment or using wasteful settling procedures.
